My .02 on the AZ book "ban"

ok straight up, any attempt to limit kids' education is bullshit, but I've been puzzled by the reporting on the "book ban" which I put in quotation since to me a "ban" implies no access, but reportedly the books will still be in libraries, but not used in class.

Don't get me wrong the canceling of the classes in and of itself is complete crap, complete.  I sat down to write a post about it this weekend, but could not find adequate sources of information that I trusted. I was mostly puzzled by disparities in the "lists" of books, one of which is quite short (seven books), and one of which is considerably longer (and includes white dudes like Shakespeare and Thoreau, causing much confusion and ire among the non-Bard literate folks unaware that the Tempest is an allegory of the new world with Caliban standing in for the indigenous.  Frankly Thoreau is ONE DANGEROUS mo-fo, which is why I teach him at every opportunity).

If it's forbidden that you use it in the classroom, I think the word "ban" applies. Specially considering that not too many teenagers have the curiosity to go and seek this stuff on their own. As a teacher, you'd probably get in trouble if an administrator finds out that you "informally" suggested a student that s/he might like one of the forbidden books.

I had somehow missed this. I'm from AZ originally. It seems that my home state is intent on being known as a whacko state... going all the way back to Gov. Meecham and the MLK day flap. That hit right as I was going off to college, so I spent my freshman year trying to explain that the entire state wasn't racist and/or insane.

I'm curious to see how this plays out. My fb is totally aflutter with it. Will students take it upon themselves to seek iut these books?

I am as well. IN a sense I wonder if telling kids they can' do something will bounce back on the idiots and the kids will scurry to get them. Someone should ship tons of the used ones to AZ for free distribution. Of course the Bard and Thoreau are avail. online for free!
